Women In The Work Place!
Primary source
Working Women: Literacy Ladies
Miriam Willoughby, an older woman who befriends the factory workers, hints at the dilemma of balance when she comments: “Labor is beautiful: but not too much.” Later she ponders whether the long hours the women work in the service of a machine may, in the end, be a perverse economy:
But this was waste—this woman-faculty
Tied to Machinery, part of the machine
That wove cloth, when it might be better clothing hearts
And minds with queenly raiment…
Here was a problem, then,
For the political theorist: how to save
Mind from machinery’s clutches. (3).
This document shows how women felt during this era. When people think of the Industrial Revolution and women they think of women in factories doing repetitive work with huge machinery. However, this document shows how one woman really felt about the work that went on in the factory she worked at! She felt like it dehumanized the women in the factories because of the sheer size of the machines and the work room they had. They felt so cramped in the small shoe box areas that they had to work in with poor light and air ventilation. Also, they felt trapped in the factories because of the amount of hours they spent in the small quarters. Through analyzing the quote, the woman who wrote this, was obviously bothered by her working conditions and thought that something had to change for women in the work place!

Robinson “For all her glowing rhetoric, participated in a strike against wage cuts ( as an eleven year old), leading the walkout of the girls in her room. She later commented: As I looked back at the long time that followed me, I was more proud than I have ever been since at any success I may have achieved, and more proud than I shall ever be again until my own beloved State gives to its women citizens the right of suffrage. Having one little girl stand up for rights" (3).
This direct quote from an actual event witnessed by another factory worker shows how much gumption a child could have. She had had enough of one place for too long. It doesn’t even sound like an eleven year would be that brave enough to walk out of a factory at this time period. She didn’t just stand up for her rights but the rights of every woman in the United States. This girl in the workplace shows Americans that we have to stand up for what is right and defy what is definitely wrong.

Political Diversity
In 100 years of history there were 25 different presidents all contributing to the Industrial Revolution either in a positive light or a negative light.
· Some notable presidents during the Industrial Revolution would include:
George Washington
Thomas Jefferson
James Monroe
Andrew Jackson
Abraham Lincoln
· The Election of 1860 had a huge impact on the American public because of the split of the Democratic Party with the issue over slavery. Therefore, the Republican Party had it somewhat easy with the votes and nabbed the win of the election with one of the most remembered and celebrated Presidents Abraham Lincoln. This would end up being a huge upset for the Democratic Party but all in all good for the US.
· The Election of 1896 would be another huge election because of the state of the economy of the United States. The entire political debate was the free coinage of silver. Republican tactics seemed to have won out due to the fear that they put into the factory workers and the effects that silver would have on them and their families. William McKinley ended up win to a close election against Williams Jennings Bryan (6).
